ASUC Senate Votes Unanimously to Support Save the University and the UC-Wide Walkout on September 24th 2009

 At the Senate meeting tonight the ASUC Senate unanimously passeda bill in support of Save the University and the UC-Wide Walkout. The Senate will participate in the Walkout on the 24th of September 2009 as a concerned body of student representatives and urges all students to attend the teach-ins on the 23rd of September, as well as the rally on the 24th.The bill is attached below.

A Bill in Support of Save the University and the UC-Wide Walkout
on September 24th 2009

WHEREAS, on July 21st 2009 Save the University was established by concerned faculty of the University of California, Berkeley; and,

WHEREAS, Save the University was formed in the spirit of shared governance in response to California’s current fiscal crisis and its immediate threat to the core mission of public higher education at the University of California (UC); and,

WHEREAS, Save the University is a coalition across all nine UC campuses; and,

WHEREAS, faculty at other UC campuses, California State Universities, and Community College campuses, as well as students, staff, parents, alumni, business leaders, elected officials, and all who share concern regarding the impact of budgetary decisions upon the entire structure of higher education stand in solidarity; and,     

WHEREAS, Save the University is committed to preserving the excellence of the University of California in  teaching and research across all academic disciplines and professional schools; and,

WHEREAS, the standards of excellence in teaching and research are threatened by those charged with the responsibility to maintain and promote them; and,

WHEREAS, UC President Mark Yudof has mishandled the current crisis, therefore galvanizing university employees, faculty, staff and students to vote “No Confidence” in his leadership; and,

WHEREAS, although separate from Save the University, the Faculty Walkout of September 24th 2009 stands for the same cause and is endorsed by the American Association of University Professors and supported unanimously by over 100 GSIs from 17 departments; and,

WHEREAS, under its constitution, the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) is committed to effective student participation in all areas of student concern; and,

WHEREAS, the ASUC is deeply committed to upholding the quality of education in public higher education institutions in California,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the ASUC stands in support of Save the University and participates in the Faculty Walkout on the 24th of September 2009 as a concerned body of student representatives; and,

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the ASUC demands that Governor Schwarzenegger, the legislature, and the Board of Regents fulfill the Higher Education Compact (2005) and reaffirm the commitments established in the Master Plan for Higher Education (Donahoe Act; 1960); and,

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the ASUC urges the Office of the President to act in concord with faculty to preserve excellence in the core teaching and research missions of the University; and,

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the ASUC demands no layoffs, furloughs, or pay cuts for salaries under $40,000; and,

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the ASUC requests that the ASUC President and Executive Affairs Vice President meet with respective stakeholders, designated members of the Office of the President, to gain a greater understanding of the situation, represent students’ thoughts and concerns, and discuss plans for future student fee changes in a effort to increase the transparency in this process; and,

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the ASUC demands a complete rollback of student fees to 2008-2009 level, and a permanent freeze on fee increases beyond the rate of inflation; and,

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the ASUC urges for greater administrative and budgetary transparency in recognition of the principle of shared governance, and demands full disclosure of the UC budget; and,

THEREFORE BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the ASUC President and External Affairs Vice President are authorized to write letters to the respective stakeholders in support of Save the University and the Faculty Walkout on the 24th of September 2009.
